In fact, it had been documented more than ten years earlier that when ascorbic acid and glutathione are together in the presence of the hexoxidase [ascorbate oxidase] described by Szent-Gyorgyi the glutathione wholly protects the vitamin from oxidation, whilst it is itself oxidized at a rate which, with the same concentration of enzyme, is exactly the same as the rate with which ascorbic acid is oxidized when alone.
